Epic Games to cut it’s workforce by 16% and sell Bandcamp
Epic Games, the company behind the blockbuster video game Fortnite, is set to reduce its workforce by 870 employees, amounting to approximately 16% of its staff. Alongside this move, the company is selling Bandcamp, an online music site it acquired just last year.
CEO Tim Sweeney explained that despite previous cost-cutting measures, the company was still spending more than it earned, necessitating these layoffs for financial stability.
Bandcamp, known for its support of independent artists, raised questions when it was purchased by Epic in 2022. The recent sale suggests these doubts were valid.
While specifics about the job cuts remain undisclosed, Sweeney assured that they would not impact the core development or operations of the company, with the majority of layoffs occurring outside of these areas.
Epic Games, famous for its Unreal Engine that powers popular titles like Fortnite and Gears of War, has a global presence, including offices in the UK. Fortnite, boasting approximately 400 million registered users, continues to be a global gaming phenomenon.
