Indie Success: Hypercharge: Unboxed Hits 50,000 Xbox Sales in Five Days

The indie game Hypercharge: Unboxed has reached an impressive milestone, selling 50,000 copies on Xbox in just five days. This achievement is particularly notable as it was accomplished without the backing of a publisher or a Game Pass deal, as announced by Digital Cybercherries, the small UK-based studio behind the game.

Digital Cybercherries, a team of just six people, expressed their gratitude and excitement over this success. Joe Henson, the creative gameplay and marketing director at Digital Cybercherries, shared his enthusiasm:

“I’m really overwhelmed by the success of our game on Xbox and can’t thank everyone enough for buying the game. 50,000 sales might not mean much in the realm of AAA, but for our small team of six, in a tough time for the industry, with no support from a big publisher, selling 50,000 on Xbox in only a few days is really a big deal! Thank you again to everyone who has supported us!”

Hypercharge: Unboxed draws inspiration from beloved films like Toy Story and Small Soldiers. It features a story campaign mode playable solo or with up to four players in online co-op, and it supports both local and online split screen play. Additionally, the game includes various PVP modes.

Initially launched on Steam in April 2020, Hypercharge: Unboxed received a ‘very positive’ user review rating. The game's recent Xbox release has gone viral on social media, with gameplay clips amassing millions of views.

Henson, who transitioned from running a family business to designing and marketing games, emphasised the significance of Hypercharge: Unboxed’s success for their small team. The game’s achievement on Xbox without a Game Pass deal stands out, as many indie developers often rely on Game Pass to mitigate the risks of launching new games across multiple platforms. Despite this, Hypercharge: Unboxed has found substantial success independently.

This accomplishment underscores the potential for indie developers to thrive even without the support of major publishers, highlighting the hard work and dedication of the team at Digital Cybercherries.
