CD Projekt Red ends expansion plans for Cyberpunk 2077
CD Projekt Red has announced that it will not be pursuing additional expansions for its once highly anticipated game, Cyberpunk 2077. Following a troubled launch marked by technical issues and refunds, the game has seen improvement, though not without lingering discontent among fans.
The impending Update 2.0 aims to address some concerns, yet a devoted community of players still seeks more from the cyberpunk world. The game's sole expansion, Phantom Liberty, is set to release this September. CD Projekt Red's Senior Vice President of business development, Michał Nowakowski, revealed in a recent Q&A that the decision to forego further DLCs stems from technological changes, notably the studio's shift from its Red Engine to Unreal Engine.
Nowakowski stated, "This is the last time we're working on the Red Engine for the time being at least, and in the foreseeable future as you know we are working on the Unreal Engine from Epic. This was one of the key reasons why we decided this was the only one."
The transition aligns with the studio's concurrent focus on projects like The Witcher 4 and an upcoming Cyberpunk sequel. Over 260 team members are dedicated to The Witcher 4's development, while a significant portion of the Phantom Liberty team will transition, emphasizing CD Projekt Red's commitment to new ventures. As fans await updates on these eagerly anticipated games, the studio's strategic decisions continue to shape the future of its iconic titles.
