Sony Introduces Cloud Gaming for PlayStation Portal, No PS5 Required
Sony is making waves with a major update to its handheld PlayStation Portal (PSP): cloud gaming capabilities, removing the need for a PlayStation 5 console to enjoy next-gen games on the go.
The Big News
PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers can now access a beta that enables cloud streaming directly on the PSP. This service allows users to stream over 120 PS5 games, including titles like Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
With cloud gaming, users can play PS5-exclusive titles without owning the console itself. All you need is the PSP handheld and a stable internet connection.
Cloud Gaming: The Tech Breakdown
Resolution & Performance: Games stream at up to 1080p resolution and 60fps, delivering a smooth but basic experience for fast-paced or visually demanding games. This is a solid offering for casual gaming but falls short of competitive gaming standards, where higher frame rates are essential.
Internet Requirements:
13 Mbps or higher: Play in 1080p.
7 Mbps to 13 Mbps: Streaming is capped at 720p.
Features: The PSP retains hallmark PlayStation features like haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and motion controls for an immersive experience.
Why It Matters
Previously, the PSP required a PS5 console to access games through Wi-Fi-based Remote Play. Now, with cloud gaming, users can stream titles directly from Sony’s servers, making the $200 handheld a cost-effective alternative to the $500 PS5 Slim or $700 PS5 Pro.
Limitations
The PSP’s 8-inch screen and 60fps cap reflect its mid-tier hardware. While suitable for casual gamers, hardcore players may miss the full console experience, such as 4K graphics, ray-tracing, and high refresh rates that a PS5 or PC gaming rig can provide.
