Atreus’ voice from God of War Ragnarok had to be edited due to actors voice dropping

Voice actor Sunny Suljic, who performs the voice of Atreus in God of War Ragnarok has aged quite a bit since his original performance at the age of 13 in the 2018 God of War game. Now aged 17, the maturing of his voice has created a new challenge for the development team at Santa Monica Studios.

In a PlayStation behind-the-scenes video, God of War Ragnarok supervising dialogue director Jodie Kupsco discussed how Sunny is a teenaged boy in puberty and how his voice has changed significantly throughout the development of Ragnarok. This meant that the audio department had their work cut out for them in order to edit Sunny’s dialogue recordings and have them sound consistent with the voice of Atreus that players had become accustomed to.

The development team also faced working limitations regarding motion capture as a result of covid restrictions, which forced the studio to adapt to the new conditions in a creative way which would not compromise the quality of the game. God of War Ragnarok senior producer Ariel Angelotti has reassured fans that the game cinematics have not been altered as a result of these limitations.

God of War Ragnarok launches on November 9th for PlayStation and the team at Santa Monica Studios are dedicated to providing a high quality and polished experience. All necessary steps will be made to ensure that Suljic’s change in voice does not impact the consistency of Atreus’ dialogue.
