Gearbox Joins Take-Two: Borderlands 4 Officially in the Works

Gearbox Entertainment, the creative force behind the beloved Borderlands series, has announced its departure from Embracer Group. The studio has confirmed that it has been acquired by Take-Two Interactive/2K, a move that comes as a surprise to many fans.

The acquisition was announced through a simple image posted on Gearbox's social media channels. Founder Randy Pitchford expressed his excitement about the acquisition, stating that Take-Two Interactive and 2K will help take the company to the next level. One of the key highlights of this announcement is the confirmation that Borderlands 4 is currently in active development.

Take-Two/2K has released a statement confirming the acquisition, with an expected completion date by June 30, 2024. The statement also emphasises the active development of Borderlands 4, indicating that fans can expect more exciting adventures in the Borderlands universe.

As part of the acquisition, Take-Two Interactive acquires several assets, including Gearbox Software in Frisco, Texas, Gearbox Montreal, Gearbox Studio Quebec, and the intellectual properties associated with the Borderlands, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, Homeworld, Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms, and Duke Nukem franchises.

Embracer Group will retain certain assets, including Gearbox Publishing San Francisco, which will be renamed. The company also retains publishing rights to the Remnant franchise, Hyper Light Breaker, and more.

This acquisition is part of Embracer Group's ongoing reorganisation, following its acquisition spree over the past few years. The company has made several strategic moves, including dividing Saber Interactive, laying off employees, and reportedly cancelling multiple projects within a short period.

Fans of the Borderlands series can look forward to more information about Borderlands 4 and other projects from Gearbox Entertainment in the coming months.
