Helldivers 2 Blasts Off with 1 Million Copies Sold in Just Four Days
Arrowhead Games' manic sci-fi shooter Helldivers 2 has taken the gaming world by storm, selling a staggering 1 million copies in its first four days on the market. Launched on February 8th for PlayStation 5 and PC, the game has far surpassed the developer's internal expectations, according to Arrowhead CEO and creative director Johan Pilestedt.
"We are around a million right now," Pilestedt shared on X, emphasizing how the game is "blowing through" their sales projections. Helldivers 2's success is evident on Steam, where it became a top-seller and peaked at 155,926 concurrent players on PC alone. While exact figures for PlayStation 5 sales remain unknown, the combined 1 million copies across platforms paint a picture of a runaway hit.
This meteoric rise wasn't without its challenges. The influx of eager players pushed Arrowhead's servers to their limits, leading to issues with reward drops, player logins, and server stability. The studio scrambled over the weekend to deploy multiple fixes, addressing these problems head-on.
The peak concurrent player count across PC and consoles reached an impressive 360,000, momentarily threatening to overwhelm the entire system. While acknowledging the inconvenience caused to players, Pilestedt expressed the difficulty of predicting such an overwhelming response. He apologized for the hiccups and assured players of continued efforts to ensure a smooth gaming experience.
