Hacker Behind Grand Theft Auto 6 Leak Sentenced to Indefinite Hospital Confinement

In a landmark case, Arion Kurtaj, a member of the notorious hacking group Lapsus$, has been sentenced to indefinite imprisonment in a secure hospital for orchestrating the leak of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) in a cyberattack that shook the gaming industry.

Kurtaj, who was out on bail for a previous attack on Nvidia, managed to infiltrate Rockstar's internal systems while under police protection at a Travelodge. The hacker, diagnosed with acute autism, was considered unfit for trial, leading the jury to determine responsibility rather than criminal intent. Reports of violence during custody and a persistent intent to return to cybercrime were presented during the trial.

Despite arguments from Kurtaj's defense regarding the success of GTA 6's trailer, Rockstar claimed a $5 million cost and thousands of work hours. The leak, comprising source code and 90 clips, was swiftly removed by Take-Two Interactive. Kurtaj's sentence allows for potential release pending a determination that he is no longer a threat.

As the industry grapples with the aftermath of the GTA 6 breach, another significant hack targeting Insomniac Games has emerged, involving threats of releasing confidential information unless a $2 million ransom in Bitcoin is paid. Sony, yet to issue a statement, faces the aftermath of 1.67 terabytes of leaked data, including sensitive business information and employee details. Meanwhile, the pursuit of other Lapsus$ members continues, highlighting the persistent challenges posed by cybercriminals in the gaming sector.
