Hogwarts Legacy Enchants Gamers Worldwide, Achieving 22 Million Sales in 2023

In a magical triumph for the gaming industry, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment's Harry Potter spinoff, "Hogwarts Legacy," soared to unprecedented success, selling a staggering 22 million copies in 2023. David Haddad, the president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, revealed these remarkable numbers during a conversation with Variety.

The game's popularity was further underscored by 2 million copies sold during the festive December holiday season alone. Haddad proudly declared "Hogwarts Legacy" as "the best-selling game of the year in the entire industry worldwide," a notable achievement considering the typical dominance of incumbent sequel games in this position.

Circana analyst Mat Piscatella had previously speculated on the game's potential to top the charts, and if it does, it would break a trend dating back to 2009, where a Call of Duty or Rockstar game has traditionally claimed the yearly throne.

The magical journey of "Hogwarts Legacy" extended beyond sales figures, with players investing a total of 707 million hours exploring the Wizarding World, engaging in multiple playthroughs with different Houses. Warner Bros. reported impressive in-game statistics, including 819 million potions brewed, 1.3 billion plants saved, 593 million beasts rescued, and just under 5 billion evil wizards defeated.

Hogwarts Legacy, released on most platforms on February 10, 2023, enjoyed critical acclaim on PC, securing a spot as one of Steam's most-played games of the year. The game's success has sparked anticipation for future ventures in the Harry Potter universe, with Haddad teasing a Quidditch experience and hinting at "a series of other things" in development.
