Final Fantasy 14's Controller vs Keyboard Debate: How Regions Differ

The debate between controller and mouse-and-keyboard users in gaming is a hot topic, especially in MMORPGs like Final Fantasy 14. Recent data reveals clear regional preferences: Japan is the only country where the majority of players prefer gamepads and controllers, while most players worldwide favour a mouse and keyboard setup.

Final Fantasy 14 supports multiple control schemes for both PC and console players, enhancing accessibility and providing flexibility. Players can use controllers on PC and mouse and keyboard on consoles, making it easier to enjoy the game without extra purchases. Still, some fans go the extra mile to customise their controllers to match their favourite in-game jobs.

At PAX West, Final Fantasy 14 lead UI designer Kei Adagiri shared statistics on input device usage worldwide. In North America, 60% of players prefer mouse and keyboard, and in Europe, it's 67%. In Japan, however, 77% of players choose gamepads, highlighting a unique preference in the region.

Input Device Preferences in Final Fantasy 14

  • North America: 40% Controller – 60% Mouse and Keyboard

  • Europe: 33% Controller – 67% Mouse and Keyboard

  • Japan: 77% Controller – 23% Mouse and Keyboard

Standard vs. Legacy Control Scheme Preferences

Adagiri also discussed player preferences for the "Standard" and "Legacy" control schemes. The Legacy scheme allows characters to turn fully while moving backward, unlike the Standard mode, where they backpedal. Most players favour the Legacy mode: 69% in North America, 65% in Europe, and a significant 97% in Japan.

  • North America: 31% Standard – 69% Legacy

  • Europe: 35% Standard – 65% Legacy

  • Japan: 3% Standard – 97% Legacy

Regional Differences in Play Styles

The preference for controllers in Japan could be due to the popularity of PlayStation consoles there. A substantial portion of players use consoles, and this number may rise with the game’s launch on Xbox. If Final Fantasy 14 is released on Nintendo systems, as hinted by director Naoki Yoshida, these trends might shift further.

Upcoming Features and Improvements

Adagiri also mentioned upcoming quality-of-life improvements, such as chat bubbles, a raid planning board, and better gpose features. These updates will be part of the post-launch patches for the Dawntrail expansion, expected later this year or early next.

Final Fantasy 14 continues to accommodate diverse play styles and preferences, ensuring an enjoyable experience for both controller users and mouse-and-keyboard fans worldwide.
