Avengers Endgame Foreshadowed Fortnite's OG Return in 2019

Fortnite's recent return to its classic map in the OG Update seems to have been eerily foretold by Marvel's 2019 blockbuster, Avengers: Endgame. A seemingly innocuous scene featuring the Kronan warrior, Korg, engrossed in a game of Fortnite on a PlayStation 4 had long been considered a minor oversight. However, it now appears that this cinematic anomaly has rectified itself.

Avengers: Endgame, released in 2019, was set in the year 2023. Back then, Fortnite's dynamic nature meant that its map and appearance had transformed significantly over the four years since its cameo in the Marvel film. Die-hard fans with a penchant for detail couldn't help but notice the discrepancy, realizing that the classic Fortnite played by Korg would no longer exist in 2023, introducing an incongruity into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

All this changed on November 2, when Epic Games dropped the highly anticipated OG Update for their beloved battle royale game. This update took Fortnite back to its roots, resurrecting iconic locations like Tilted Towers, which players hadn't seen since 2019 when Epic had entirely revamped the game's map, seemingly bidding adieu to the original locales.

Fortnite OG was initially slated to be available for just four weeks, but its resounding success may lead Epic to reconsider its plans. The update saw an immediate surge in players, culminating in what Epic dubbed as the "biggest day" in Fortnite's history during the first weekend of Fortnite OG's availability.

These staggering numbers are difficult for Epic to overlook, especially considering the recent financial challenges that led to the layoff of 830 employees. Fortnite, a game that has left an indelible mark on the gaming industry, continues to play a pivotal role in the company's overall success. Nevertheless, CEO Tim Sweeney admitted in September 2023 that Fortnite's revenue model has evolved, and the company's profits now hinge on creator content with revenue sharing, which carries lower profit margins compared to the game's initial explosion in popularity.
