Steam Rolls Out Built-In Game Recording: Here’s How to Capture Your Best Games!

Valve has officially rolled out Steam Game Recording to all users, bringing a built-in, versatile recording tool for PC, Mac, and Steam Deck gamers. This new feature allows players to record audio and video directly through Steam without needing third-party software, making it easier than ever to capture highlights, funny moments, or epic gaming sessions. Previously available only in beta, this new addition provides a seamless way to record and manage your game footage.

Key Features and Setup

This Steam client update allows users to initiate recordings manually by pressing Ctrl + F11 (the default hotkey) or to configure automatic recording settings. You can fine-tune the recording quality, adjust storage allocation, and set time limits, giving players full control over their recordings. If you have non-Steam games that support Steam Overlay, you can record those too, making it a broad solution for most games on your system.

Valve has also introduced a Session View with this release, a handy tool that enables users to organise recordings with game-specific tags and metadata. Additionally, you’ll find a new Recordings & Screenshots manager within the Session View, designed to help you easily review, tag, and organise clips.

New Export and Customization Options

The full release includes several enhancements not present during the beta phase. For example, advanced export options allow players to tailor how recordings are shared or stored. You can also set game-specific recording preferences, giving you unique settings for different games. This added flexibility is perfect for content creators and casual players alike, making it easier to create highlight reels or tutorial content directly from Steam.

Notable Changes in Compatibility

As part of this update, Steam has officially discontinued support for older systems, including Windows 7, Windows 8, and macOS versions 10.13 and 10.14. Valve had announced this change earlier, so users on those platforms will need to upgrade to continue receiving Steam updates.

Getting Started with Steam Game Recording

  1. Update Steam: Make sure your Steam client is up-to-date to access the new recording tools.

  2. Configure Settings: Go to the Game Recording tab in the Steam settings menu, where you can set recording hotkeys, quality preferences, and storage limits.

  3. Start Recording: Use Ctrl + F11 to start recording or set up automatic recording if you prefer not to miss any gameplay moments.

  4. Manage and Export: Organise your recordings in Session View with options for tagging, sorting, and exporting clips.

With these updates, Steam is taking another step towards a comprehensive gaming experience, combining gameplay with a feature-rich way to capture and share gaming memories.
