Wii Sports, The Last of Us, and more inducted into The Strong Museum's World Video Game Hall of Fame

On May 4th, The Strong Museum of Play announced the 2023 inductees for its World Video Game Hall of Fame. Four games made the cut, including Nintendo's Wii Sports, The Last of Us by PlayStation, Computer Space, and Barbie Fashion Designer. The games were chosen based on their popularity over a sustained period and their impact on the video game industry or on popular culture and society in general.

While Wii Sports was the clear winner, beating out some tough competition, many great games missed out on induction this year. Rare's GoldenEye 007, id Software's Quake, and Microsoft's Age of Empires were some of the notable games that didn't make it into the Hall of Fame this time.

Wii Sports was a groundbreaking title upon its release in 2006, as it introduced the use of motion controls for gaming. The game features five sports: tennis, baseball, bowling, golf, and boxing, and was bundled with the Nintendo Wii console. It quickly became a hit, selling over 82 million copies worldwide and becoming one of the best-selling video games of all time.

The Last of Us was another deserving inductee, as it was widely acclaimed for its storytelling, graphics, and gameplay mechanics. The post-apocalyptic game was released in 2013 and quickly became a fan favorite, winning multiple awards and selling millions of copies.

Computer Space, the first commercial video game, was also honored for its contribution to the industry, as it paved the way for the video game revolution. Meanwhile, Barbie Fashion Designer was recognized for its influence on gender representation in video games.

The World Video Game Hall of Fame at The Strong Museum of Play celebrates the best video games in history, and these four titles have now joined the ranks of other great games in the Hall of Fame.
