Microsoft to permanently close Xbox 360 store causing more than 220 digital games to disappear
Microsoft's recent announcement has sent shockwaves through the gaming community as it unveiled plans to shutter the Xbox 360 Store's game purchasing feature after July 29, 2024. While gamers will retain access to their previous downloads, the ability to buy new games and DLC for the Xbox 360 will be extinguished.
The decision's most significant impact will be on the digital-only games housed in the Xbox Live Arcade section. These titles, lacking a physical counterpart, are more vulnerable to disappearing from the gaming landscape. Although some games will find refuge on the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S platforms through backwards compatibility, others will inevitably face extinction.
Around 220 digital-only games, out of a pool of roughly 619 in the Arcade section (North America), are poised to vanish from availability. This development reignites the conversation about preserving gaming history, with advocates emphasizing the importance of safeguarding each version of a game.
While some argue that certain titles have alternative versions or platforms, the impending closure prompts reflection on the ever-evolving nature of video games. As the countdown begins, the community anticipates the preservation efforts that will determine the fate of these digital creations, ensuring the enduring legacy of gaming for future enthusiasts.
