Meta announces annual VR gaming event with new games and updates

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has announced that it will hold a 40-minute Quest Gaming Showcase on June 1st, which will be streamed on Facebook, Horizon Worlds, Twitch and YouTube. The presentation will include a pre-show at 12:45 PM ET featuring updates on titles and debut trailers, followed by the main show at 1 PM ET, where viewers can expect new games and gameplay footage. After the event, there will be "deep-dive" talks with developers.

Although Meta has not released any specific details, the event is not expected to unveil new hardware, as the company has previously noted that its next mainstream Quest headset will be released later this year. The event may therefore represent a farewell to the Quest 2, highlighting its last big games before its successor arrives.

This gaming showcase comes at an important time for Meta, which recently completed its acquisition of Within, the developer of VR fitness game Supernatural. The company is still struggling to pivot to the metaverse, with its Reality Labs unit losing billions of dollars each quarter. To spur adoption, Meta recently cut the price of the Quest Pro by a third to $999. While the gaming event is not likely to turn things around, it may help to sustain interest in Meta's VR platform ahead of the launch of new headsets.

This is the third annual Quest Gaming Showcase from Meta, with the 2022 event featuring new games such as Resident Evil 4, Among Us VR, and a new add-on for Beat Saber. The company has not revealed what games will be showcased this year, but viewers can look forward to updates and first looks at upcoming games during the event.
