Mafia Returns: The Old Country Set in 1900s Sicily, Releasing in 2025

The Mafia franchise is making a grand return with its fourth instalment, Mafia: The Old Country, officially revealed during the closing moments of gamescom Opening Night Live. Set for a 2025 release, the game will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam.

This time, the series takes players back to the early 1900s, with the story unfolding in the harsh and unforgiving world of Sicily. While details remain sparse, the reveal trailer hinted at a gritty narrative that delves into the origins of organised crime, a hallmark of the Mafia series. The game's official YouTube description teases: "Uncover the origins of organised crime in Mafia: The Old Country, a gritty mob story set in the brutal underworld of 1900s Sicily. Fight to survive in this dangerous and unforgiving era, with action brought to life by the authentic realism and rich storytelling that the critically acclaimed Mafia series is known for."

The announcement came as a massive surprise, capping off the gamescom event with a bang. Although rumours of a new Mafia game have circulated for some time, this marks the first official unveiling of The Old Country.

The Mafia series has been a staple in the gaming world since its debut in 2002, with subsequent releases including Mafia II in 2010 and Mafia III in 2016. The latter was the first in the series to be developed by 2K's Hangar 13 studio, which also spearheaded the 2020 remake, Mafia: Definitive Edition.

Hangar 13 General Manager Roman Hladík and Head of Production and Media Director Tomáš Hřebíček had previously hinted at the development of an "all-new Mafia project" in 2022. Hladik expressed the studio's excitement about continuing the beloved franchise, though he acknowledged that the project was still a few years away.

While we eagerly await more information, particularly during The Game Awards in December, the reveal of Sicily as the game's setting is already sparking fan theories. For now, be sure to check out our roundup of all the exciting announcements from gamescom Opening Night Live.
