International Red Cross launches gaming initiative to promote rules of war
The International Red Cross has launched a new initiative aimed at promoting the rules of war within the gaming community. In an effort to raise awareness about the laws governing military conflict, the humanitarian organization has challenged gamers to follow four rules when playing online first-person shooter games. The rules are as follows: no thirsting, no targeting non-violent NPCs, no targeting civilian buildings, and using medkits on everyone.
As part of the campaign, the ICRC enlisted the help of several popular Twitch streamers to play games like PUBG, Warzone, Fortnite, Tarkov, and Rainbow 6 Siege while following the rules on April 15. The ICRC even helped create a special Fortnite mode to teach players how to follow the "real rules of war" in-game.
While the initiative may seem unusual, the ICRC hopes that it will help promote the importance of following the rules of war, even in virtual settings. The rules of war are meant to protect both combatants and civilians from unnecessary harm and suffering, and the ICRC believes that by promoting these rules in the gaming community, it can help raise awareness about their importance in real-life military conflicts.
Some gamers have expressed skepticism about the initiative, suggesting that following the rules may put them at a disadvantage in the game. It remains to be seen whether the initiative will catch on among the gaming community, but the ICRC hopes that it will at least raise awareness about the importance of following the rules of war, both in-game and in real life.
