UK court finds teenage hacker guilty for leaking 'Grand Theft Auto 6' details
Two London teenagers have been found guilty of participating in a series of high-profile cyberattacks as part of the hacking group Lapsus$. The duo, responsible for disrupting Rockstar Games, Nvidia, Uber, and EE, among others, received their verdict on Wednesday.
Arion Kurtaj, 18, and an unnamed 17-year-old accomplice were held accountable for breaching Rockstar Games' servers in 2022, leaking confidential data about the anticipated game Grand Theft Auto 6. The leaked material unveiled key details, including the franchise's first female protagonist and the Miami-inspired Vice City setting.
Kurtaj's strategy involved coercing Rockstar Games through Telegram, leading to the unauthorized release of over 90 gameplay clips and images. His charges included multiple counts under the Computer Misuse Act, along with blackmail and fraud accusations.
The young hackers, central figures within Lapsus$, were also implicated in the Nvidia breach. The 17-year-old partner faced charges of computer misuse, fraud, and blackmail for stealing and ransoming a substantial volume of data from the tech company.
This case exposes the evolving landscape of cybercrime and the challenges of combating it effectively. The hackers' activities shed light on the audacity and agility of groups like Lapsus$, while also highlighting areas for improved cybersecurity measures.
