YouTube introduces "Playables" in gaming expansion
Google's YouTube is venturing into gaming with "Playables," extending its offerings beyond video, music, TV, and podcasts. These games are currently in limited public testing, accessible through the homepage. The announcement was made on YouTube's "test features and experiments" page for Premium users.
In contrast to Google's previous high-profile gaming venture, Stadia, this move is understated. Stadia aimed for cloud gaming but closed in January 2023 due to limited adoption.
"Stack Bounce," one of the Playables, offers insight into the platform's approach—a focus on casual, engaging games. Playables can be enjoyed on desktop and mobile devices.
The big question is how Playables will open up to developers, considering YouTube's roots as a content creator platform. This expansion raises concerns about monetization, content guidelines, and potential app cloning.
YouTube's venture into gaming mirrors efforts by other streaming platforms like Netflix and TikTok, reflecting the evolving landscape where streaming and gaming intersect.
