IO Interactive's Bold Move: Conor McGregor Cut from Hitman Amid Controversy

IO Interactive, the studio behind the Hitman series, has officially removed all content featuring MMA star Conor McGregor from Hitman: World of Assassination. This decision follows a recent legal ruling where McGregor was found liable in a civil rape case in the High Court of Dublin. The court awarded the plaintiff €248,000 (approximately $260,000 USD) in damages. Despite McGregor’s denial of the allegations and his plans to appeal, the controversy has sparked public backlash and scrutiny over his brand partnerships.

McGregor's Role in Hitman and Sudden Removal

McGregor was featured in Hitman: World of Assassination as "The Disruptor," an Elusive Target introduced on November 15, 2024. His character, a multi-millionaire MMA fighter and member of the secretive Ark Society, was part of a free starter mission. Additionally, a $5 DLC offered players access to "The Ostentatious" arcade contract, cosmetic items, and a special outfit. Initially scheduled to remain available until December 8, all McGregor-related content has now been pulled from sale.

On November 25, IO Interactive announced the removal on Twitter, citing the court ruling and reaffirming the company’s commitment to addressing serious matters responsibly. Trailers and promotional materials featuring McGregor were made private, and while new sales have been stopped, existing owners will retain access to their purchased content indefinitely.

Navigating Fallout Amid Bigger Plans

The decision comes as IO Interactive works on its high-profile James Bond game, a project the studio hopes will grow into a trilogy. By distancing itself from McGregor amid this controversy, IO aims to safeguard its reputation.

As McGregor prepares to appeal the decision, there is speculation about whether IO might reconsider its removal of the content. However, the studio's swift action underscores its intent to avoid negative press while maintaining goodwill with fans and stakeholders.
