Windows 11 24H2 Update: Ubisoft Games Facing Crashes, Fix in Progress
Microsoft has paused the rollout of its Windows 11 24H2 update for PCs with specific Ubisoft games installed, following widespread reports of crashes. The issue primarily affects popular titles like Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Assassin's Creed Origins, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Star Wars Outlaws, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
In a statement, Microsoft acknowledged the problem, stating that it is actively collaborating with Ubisoft to develop a fix. "We will provide more information when it is available," Microsoft assured. For now, users are advised not to manually install the 24H2 update to avoid game performance issues.
What Users Are Reporting
Affected players have taken to platforms like Reddit and Microsoft Answers forums to describe their frustrations. Issues range from black screen freezes and crashes to complete game unresponsiveness during load screens or gameplay.
One user wrote:
“I just bought a new gaming laptop with RTX 4080, Intel i9 14900HX. I can't play Origins even for 5 minutes because it crashes to a black screen, with audio. The only way to close it is from the Task Manager.”
Another noted the persistence of the error:
“Thousands of people are waiting for fixes and the ability to play their favorite games after updating to 24H2, without the ubiquitous error NTDLL.dll.”
While Ubisoft has issued a temporary fix for Star Wars Outlaws, performance issues persist. Microsoft is advising users to force-quit unresponsive games via Task Manager until a permanent resolution is found.
Broader Update Issues
The 24H2 update has not been smooth for many gamers. Last month, users of multiplayer games utilizing Epic's Easy Anti-Cheat software, including Apex Legends, Fortnite, Call of Duty, and Rocket League, reported crashes. While Microsoft has been working with Easy Anti-Cheat developers, some issues remain unresolved. Furthermore, certain Intel CPUs have also exhibited compatibility problems with the latest update.
What’s Next?
Microsoft may resume offering the update to affected users once a fix is in place. For now, users are urged to hold off on updating or stick to temporary workarounds for uninterrupted gameplay.
