Netflix Announces Squid Game Season 2 Release Date and Final Season
Netflix has finally revealed the release date for the highly-anticipated second season of Squid Game. The Korean dystopian drama will return on December 26, just after Christmas, as announced on July 31 with a teaser clip. Additionally, Netflix confirmed that a third and final season will be released in 2025.
Season two’s official description states: “Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport. Using his fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious place: the subway, looking for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji. But as his efforts yield results, the path to taking down the organisation proves deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it.”
This sequel arrives nearly three years after its 2021 debut, which broke Netflix records and became the most-watched season in the company’s history. Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the series, centred on cash-strapped contestants fighting to the death for a life-changing sum of money, garnered critical acclaim and multiple Emmy nominations. Lee Jung-jae, the lead star, became the first Korean to win the Best Actor award, and Hwang became the first Asian director to win Outstanding Drama Series for a non-English language series.
Returning cast members include Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo, with new additions Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, and others.
In November last year, Netflix debuted a spin-off reality series, Squid Game: The Challenge, where 456 contestants competed in games inspired by the show for a $4.56 million prize, the largest jackpot in TV history.
