Call of Duty 4 Surges on Steam Thanks to New Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer Mod

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered (MWR), the 2016 re-release of the iconic 2007 Call of Duty 4, has unexpectedly surged up Steam’s top sellers list. Currently sitting at number three in the U.S. and holding a spot in the top 10 worldwide, this older title is outperforming heavyweights like Dota 2 and Baldur's Gate 3.

This resurgence isn’t just due to the game’s recent $20 sale. The real driving force is a highly anticipated fan-made mod called H2M, set to launch on August 16. The mod is reviving the beloved multiplayer experience of Modern Warfare 2 (2009) on PC, but it requires a copy of Modern Warfare Remastered to function.

H2M is designed to capture the essence of classic Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer while introducing new features, including a wide selection of maps, revamped progression systems, unique camos, remastered weapons, and custom attachments. Although the mod hasn’t officially released yet, early access given to some YouTubers and streamers has generated significant buzz. “I have been waiting years for this day,” remarked CoD YouTuber FaZe Scope after exploring H2M’s main menu.

This mod is filling a significant gap left by Activision's 2020 remaster of Modern Warfare 2, which oddly omitted multiplayer. For many, Modern Warfare 2 remains the pinnacle of Call of Duty multiplayer, making the return of its classic gameplay a major event.

H2M not only includes remastered versions of every iconic MW2 map but also transforms campaign levels into multiplayer arenas, offering a total of 54 maps, including all the CoD4 maps. For those craving the nostalgic experience of 2009 with a few modern twists, H2M is the answer.

H2M will be free when it launches, but players must have a legitimate copy of Modern Warfare Remastered to access it. Streamer MikeRxqe has also provided a helpful tip for avoiding a common issue with modern graphics cards: before diving into H2M, launch the CoD4 campaign and disable shader caching.

This combination of classic gameplay, modern enhancements, and a complete absence of microtransactions is reigniting interest in Modern Warfare Remastered, propelling it back into the spotlight and ensuring its place among the top sellers on Steam.
