Our Top 5 MMORPG Picks For You!
5 - New World
Developed by Amazon Game Studios in 2021, New World had a very successful release shortly followed by a massive reduction in the player base due to game breaking issues with the core game systems. Since then, New World has made a strong recovery after mending some of the issues and introducing quality of life fixes that has strongly improved the games reputation. In New World, there are no classes like traditional mmorpgs, only weapon skills that players progress in order to unlock better skills, meaning that the same character can fit all roles by just swapping weapons and gear. Players have multiple factions to choose from which are constantly fighting to gain territory in PVP battles across Aeternum Island. New World is getting another major game update in October called Brimstone Sands, where players will be able to fight it out in an ancient Egypt-like desert land.
4 - The Elder Scrolls Online
The Elder Scrolls is one of the most iconic story-driven RPG franchises out there with huge titles released over the years such as Morrowind and Skyrim. With the huge area of Tamriel to explore as one of the 10 races such as the cat-like Khajiit, and 5 classes like the fire breathing Dragonknight, it’s a game that’s easy to get lost in. The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) was released in 2014 and has had 6 expansions released since with High Isle being the most recent which was released in April this year. In High Isles, players can explore the Systres Archipelago. A land never-before-seen in The Elder Scrolls, traversed with stunning white cliffs, majestic castles, and perilous jungles where you encounter a chivalrous Breton society.
3 - Runescape (RS3 & OSRS)
Runescape for many was their first time experiencing the MMORPG genre, with copious amounts of goblin slaying, ore mining, and exploring the vast lands of Gielinor. Released back in 2001, Runescape has changed a lot over the years, evolving into what many refer to as the Runescape 3 game we know today. There were so many fans of the original version of the game that in 2013, Jagex released Old School Runescape, which satisfied the nostalgia for many. Jagex continued to release original content and updates for OSRS, many of which are determined by a voting system that the players can participate in. Runescape 3 released a major update in August this year, Legacy Of Zamorak, where players can explore new dungeons and battle the Lord of Chaos.
2 - World of Warcraft (Retail & Classic)
Released back in 2004, World of Warcraft is probably the most well known game in the genre, with its 9th expansion, Dragonflight, expected to release in december 2022. In Dragonflight, players will be able to explore the new Dragon Isles zone while playing the new dragon-like race, the Dracthyr, with their new race only classe, the Evoker.
We’ve also included World of Warcraft Classic, which was released in 2019 and is a remastered version of the original game and is now up to the third original World of Warcraft remastered expansion, Wrath of the Lich King. Many say that the frosty undead planes of Northrend were some of the best iterations of the game to date, and we can raid these lands when the game releases on the 26th of September.
1 - Final Fantasy XIV
Final Fantasy XIV, released in 2010, thrusts players into the realm of Eorzea as one of 8 unique races with a multitude of customisations options. It is the fourteenth entry in the Final Fantasy series which comes filled with its rich lore and history throughout the games 5 expansions.
Players find themselves caught up in both an invasion by the hostile Garlean Empire and the threat of the primals, the deities of the land's beastmen tribes. Players are not limited to one class (referred to as jobs) per character, allowing them to swap from a vicious melee Lancer to an Arcanist mage depending on what the situation requires.
